It is December. This means the Steampunks (les Vaporistes) of Belgium & the Northern half of France had their annual gathering in a small mining town near Mons: It was Uchronicité ! It snowed on December 4th and that's rather special down here, but still we made it back & forth for a very short visit to Uchronicité , the Belgian steampunk gathering. Like before, it's an extremely friendly event where you take some time to chat with people. Sadly enough I did not taste any of that delicious mead.. driving through the snow will make you think twice. And for those who are strong in mathematics: we left at 17h and I finally got home at 20h30. ....

It has been silent for a long time because I'm overwhelmed by work & work events at the moment.. which means that my backlog is currently growing and growing. Fotofair was one of these work events. Which means I was working in the Sony tent with the best toys-for-boys instead of running & gunning; Luckily we had the best possible tent to be in during a heat-wave.. all sides open so the wind could cool us down, in the shadow of an old tree, next to the water , with a well-stocked fridge and in a straight line to the ice-cream parlor .  . The only place I managed to visit before opening was the Steam Village by the Time-travellers but luckily several steampunkers came to visit us. Hence I made a few stills and a quick video while cooling my feet in the lake. The video on Clapper: Splash . Thanks to the colleagues at Sigma & Nikon who let me try some new and great gear.. but I'm still keeping my Sony cameras for the moment. ;-) You can find all stills...

During the shooting day at the Verbeke Foundation last month I got a quick glimpse of this soon-to-be-married steampunk couple. And BAM here they are again! I blame it on Geert who keeps on bringing cosplayers & photographers together. I still had an idea to shoot with them from last time at this location. Placeholder for the video It is impossible to deny the uniqueness and - for a strange person like myself - the appeal of a place like the Verbeke Foundation .  Admitedly I wasn't fast enough to shoot all creatures who roamed the grounds. The ones who got away: . But know that no escape is forever. (* insert daemonic laughter *) And I did catch another unsuspecting newborn creature so: More is coming Namaste & till tomorro...

Do you have 5€ left in your pocket? That's enough to pay the entry fee for this annual gathering of Belgian steampunks. Or is it steampunkers? Or vaporistes? Meh.. Choose whatever you fancy. There are two kind of genre events in the Benelux: The big ones. Nearly all of them are owned by large corporations ( multinationals even ), held in big venues and these have become éxtremely expensive for both visitors and vendors. For the current entry prices you expect to be WOW-ed and entertained at a high level. High expectations are always difficult to meet. And there are a few tiny events trying to stay afloat. Just like for the big events the prices to get something organised have gone through the roof. But they mostly work with volonteers instead of a corporate overhead workforce consisting of more high payed managers than workers and they don't need to bring home truckloads of cash to please the shareholders & investors.
