Event - Uchronicité 2023

It snowed on December 4th and that's rather special down here, but still we made it back & forth for a very short visit to Uchronicité, the Belgian steampunk gathering.

Would you like a steampunk event in a 19th century fortress? One like Fort de Condé in Picardie?

Like before, it's an extremely friendly event where you take some time to chat with people. You can always read my remarks about the event in the reports from previous editions. 

Since it was a very short visit, only a few pictures were made.

Getting mentally ready for Uchronicité.Wolves are neither big, nor bad

Sadly enough I did not taste any of that delicious mead.. driving through the snow will make you think twice. And for those who are strong in mathematics: we left at 17h and I finally got home at 20h30.

Life without war is but a very distant memory.. drowned by the wishes of my Emperor.Drink my healing potion

OK, this was the shortest event report of the year.. for an event which I adore & try to lure more Flemish steampunkers towards. Next year I hope to stay longer, to make more pictures, to stroll around in my kilt again & to have some mead with that great food & those crazy retrofuturistic people!

Since next year we'll do less events and try to do a few new events we're looking into fantasy fairs like Voyag'Imaginaire (Fort de Condé/Picardie) or Cidre & Dragon (Calvados).. because I need to celebrate still being alive in 2024 with loads of pancakes + different alcoholic beverages.. and high mountains (but that's a different story).

Strange, do you sometimes have the feeling you nearly didn't make any photos during an event because you were spending so much time talking, but then after a long winding road you finally return home, and you suddenly discover a mountainload of shots on your cameras? Event - Les fêtes médiévales de Binche (2024)

Let's be really quick and dirty about this event: ▼ There was was an ice-cold wind, but most of the day it was dry, △ Each time the sun showed itself it was wonderful and we all smiled, △ Got a superb medieval cape that really helped against the wind, △ Great food ( including pancakes! ) and too much mead to taste, △ Überfriendly people ( visitors, reenactors, larpers & vendors.. sorry, I didn't run into anyone of the organisation, n or crew ) △ Excellent location: high upon the ramparts of the old city, △ Parked by accident right behind the corner of the event, △ Free parking, free toilets, and a fountain that will be useful during a future hot edition , △ Music by Skayrish , cannon fire, birds of prey, throwing things ( a bad combination with mead ),.. △ A fun afternoon eventhough it was tiny. . .   Let's provide you a few links: ▷ All photos can always be found on/downloaded from my Flickr and here ! ▷ A " How to download stills from Flickr &

Collab - Verbeke Foundation cosplay day 2024

A few weeks ahead of the first cosplay shoot day of 2024 in the Verbeke Foundation I had wisely estimated that I would run into & make pictures of 10% of all cosplayers. That was a gross misestimation.. I think it's closer to 5%. Every edition organizer Geert seems to double the number of participants. I still don't know how he manages, but kudos for gathering somewhere around 240 participants. Event - Elftopia 2021

The 1st costume event in.. nearly 2 years? You can't believe the ecstasy of opening those tickets in the mail, getting that CovidSafePass in time and hearing that it would not get cancelled as feared ( unlike Castlefest ). Preparing the cameras. Getting ideas for shots. Actually smiling. Thank you Elftopia . However there was a little hick-up. I could blame it on traffic jams making us arrive extremely late.. but it wasn't that. It was exactly as feared and predicted in this post : I didn't dare to make photos. Have I gotten scared of walking up to people for a picture? Have I lost so much self-confidence? Did I stop trusting my technical instincts? Did I start doubting my gear? Haven't I talked to live strangers for that long? Is this what people call a panic attack or anxiety? I guess a bit of all of those. Meade helped a bit. Spending some time on the event finally got me clicking again.. but by that time the fair was closing its gates. So I returned home with on

Event - Internationale carnavalsstoet Hasselt

Yes, I know: I had promised to cover only one carnaval's parade per year. But I have a great excuse: a brandnew camera fell into my lap to experiment with and I needed an event for testing. So no, it was neither the free booze, nor the happy people, nor the smoutebollen that lured me to Hasselt.. those are simply perks of working . Just to be clear: that Sony A9III is a magnificent camera with crazy specs. I will probably consider buying the 2nd or 3rd generation of its Global Shutter sensor technology, but for now it's great but not needed for what I shoot. Sports and wildlife shooters are the intended targets and they'll enjoy it greatly.  Hasselt carnaval has a very enjoyable parade wth several international participants & loads of confetti. The 2024 parcours had some very long, straight streets.. perfect to test a huge 300mm f2.8-lens. Thes most excillerating was however something tiny & strictly personal: I really felt good that day and jumped right

Body-Art Festival

In een klein dorpje nabij Mechelen verzamelen zich sinds 2000 ieder jaar opnieuw een keur aan bodypaint- en make-upartiesten voor de laatste grote Europese wedstrijd van het jaar: de felbegeerde Body Artist Award. Op 12 november kan het publiek deze levende kunstwerken bewonderen tijdens het ganse scheppingsproces, zichzelf laten grimeren, deelnemen aan workshops en de mooiste bodypaints vastleggen op de gevoelige plaat. Eigenlijk zijn er zo 4 titels om te verdelen: één voor de mooiste airbrush, één voor het beste spons & penseelwerk, één in de categorie special effects en een laatste voor de mooiste festivalfoto. In elke discipline mogen amateurs, studenten en (semi) pro's zich met elkaar meten. Wees er dus tijdig bij, alvorens deze creaties voor altijd verdwijnen onder een warme douche.
