Northlands sourcebook for Pathfinder

The Open Design sourcebook for adventures in the icy north is causing impressionable youths to wear furry hats and quaff from horns.
Okay, so maybe it's not having that strong an effect. But we're seeing some great reviews for Northlands:
An innovative treatment of the Northlands for Midgard inspired by Norse and Viking myth flavoured with steppe Russian, Finnish and Inuit culture. Being a bit of a Norse snob, this was a joy to read and as usual if you can't use it all, then you can certainly plunder the choice bits of this hoard.
- Fame and Fortune
Northlands is an excellent example of Open Design at its finest. Whether you like to personally craft your campaign world, or use completely pre-packaged settings, you will find plenty of value in this publication.
- Review on the Paizo Store
If you ever want to include a viking culture in your game, you need this product. Brilliant, brilliant stuff. My highest possible rating.
- Review on the Paizo Store
Northlands does for the North what Oriental Adventures did for the East.
- Mordicai Caeli
Head to the KQ store and pick up your copy of Northlands today!

BEST OF BUTFF-weekend in München

BUTFF gaat over de grens
B-Movie, Underground & Trash Film Festival verovert Europa

The Festival of Games (Utrecht NL)

Festival of Games: International visitors outnumber local participants

Leading gaming trade show offers a perfect combination of international business and market data

This year’s edition of the Festival of Games will take place on 28-29 April in Utrecht, The Netherlands. The leading gaming trade show sees a major uptake in interest from abroad: More than 60% of this year’s Festival of Games participants are international visitors. Ranging from Jordan to Korea and from Russia to Canada these participants turn the Festival of Games into the major business platform for the European games industry. The Netherlands, with its wide range of highly qualified personnel as a result of various levels of game related education and industry opportunities as a result of digital distribution are important drivers for the international interest and the high growth of the Dutch games industry.

During the Festival of Games, Deloitte will present a research report with market data on the Dutch games industry that substantiates these advantages. In addition, Newzoo presents the first results of the 2011 National Gamers Surveys. Key insights on consumer gaming behavior in Western as well as Emerging markets: number of gamers, consumer spend, type of games played and a comparison between the Western and Emerging markets such as Russia, Mexico and Brazil. With this, the Festival of Games will offer an exclusive and unique view on the games industry and its consumers.

The opening keynote of the Festival of Games Conference will be given by Al Lowe, the creator of Leisure Suit Larry, the adventure game that opened a whole new genre in the game industry during the 80s. Lowe will be joined by delegates from the top of the international games industry: Activision, LucasArts, Eidos, Endemol and Unity Technologies are just a few examples from a list of over 35 speakers. In addition, several publishers, developers, distributors and service providers are doing business at the event. For the second consecutive year, the Career Fair promises to be Europe's biggest career event in gaming with studios such as the Dutch creator of Killzone 3, Guerrilla Games looking for new staff.

In the last five years the Dutch government has increased their support for the creative industry and the games industry in particular. These efforts contributed to the rapid growth and resulted in the interest of renowned firms such as Deloitte to engage in the recent market research. “One of the findings of the report is the positive effect of the rise in digital distribution of casual games resulting in a growth impetus. That growth has led so far to a significant increase of many relatively small development companies, in addition to some already existing larger companies that continue to develop further", usaid Daan Witteveen, Managing Partner Technology, Media and Telecommunications at Deloitte.

Newzoo’s National Gamers Surveys have provided actionable market data for several years now. From the raw 2011 data it already has become clear that the average time spent on games in western markets has grown 50 to 100 percent depending on country. This growth is clearly fuelled by the expansion of mobile devices and social networks as game platforms and the large scale adaptation of the free-to-play business model of online gaming.

According to Reinout te Brake, CEO of MMO Traffic, the research results show that MMO / social gaming will achieve exponential growth in the coming years. “This is driven to a large extent by a move towards ‘free to play’, the participation of new groups of gamers, and mobile gaming. We expect that especially the latter will provide a great boost to the market in 2012.” Te Brake is pleased with the growth in the international character of the Festival of Games: “With this show The Netherlands underline their role and ambition in the worldwide market for online gaming and beyond.”

THE FESTIVAL OF GAMES
The Festival of Games takes place on April 28-29, 2011, at the Jaarbeurs Utrecht in the Netherlands. The 2010 event attracted over 2000 visitors, with 180 companies from 25 countries.

The Festival of Games is the most effective games industry event, that combines a conference, the international matchmaking event called Pitch & Match, a business Expo for trade visitors, and the largest games industry Career Fair of Europe. The Conference in 2011 is powered by
GamesIndustry.biz and Gamer.nl and sponsored by MMO Traffic.

With the 2011 edition entitled "Games Anywhere", the Festival of Games will be all about how the eruption of games in every sector of the consumer market has interacted with the videogames business. The two-day Conference on April 28-29 will have a strong focus on convergence and transmedia, with the speakers Al Lowe, creator of Leisure Suit Larry, Patrick Liu, producer at EA DICE, Tom DuBois, Executive producer at OnLive, Nils-Holger Henning, CCO of Bigpoint, Dan Winters, VP Developer Relations of Activision, Nicholas Francis, co-founder of Unity, Jurian van der Meer, Managing Director of Endemol Games and Scott Steinberg CEO of Techsavvy Global recently announced.

The Festival of Games is organized by the NLGD Foundation and is made possible by the Dutch ministry of Economic Affairs, the province of Utrecht and the city of Utrecht.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D

A LEGEND RETURNS IN MAGICAL 3D THIS JUNE

Experience The Legend of ZeldaTM: Ocarina of Time 3D in the palm of your hand, exclusively on Nintendo 3DS

19th April, 2011 – One of the most critically-acclaimed games of all time The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time has returned, this time in full 3D - without the need for glasses - and exclusively to Nintendo 3DS. Brace yourselves this summer as The Legend of Zelda™: Ocarina of Time 3D - a masterful enhancement on one of the landmark releases in video game history – comes to Europe on 17th June, 2011.

With phenomenally re-mastered graphics and new stunning 3D visuals, fans of the original game and newcomers alike will be able to marvel at this gaming classic to join the daring adventures of one of video-gaming’s greatest heroes – Link!

Guide Link – a young boy who is tasked with saving the land of Hyrule from Ganondorf, the Gerudo King of Thieves. The evil Ganondorf is intent on gaining mastery both over the land of Hyrule and time itself and he is led by his ambition to overthrow the current Royal Family of Htrule. It is up to Link to stop him in his tracks as you guide him on a magical journey through time. Explore vast landscapes, mythical temples, dungeons, towns and villages, as well as
interact with many different characters and battle various enemies – all in stunning 3D.

The game’s original control scheme has been completely re-designed to fully make the best use of the capabilities of the Nintendo 3DS system. Players will be able to control Link by utilising the Circle Pad whilst the Touch Screen of the Nintendo 3DS is used to assign items, check maps and ensure that Link is wearing the appropriate equipment - all in a fresh and intuitive way. Players can also take advantage of the in-built gyro sensor of the Nintendo 3DS; the implemented motion controls allow you to look around your environment when in first
person perspective simply by physically moving the Nintendo 3DS system.

Not only does the fully-3D gameplay experience provide easier in-game navigation, but an improved and intuitive interface gives you better control as you solve puzzles, travel through time and explore the immersive land of Hyrule. Players not so familiar to the Legend of Zelda series can also get a helping hand through bite sized videos available in-game which will provide hints on how to solve puzzles encountered during your journey.

Fans of the original game will be pleased to know that The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D also heralds the inclusion of two brand new additional challenges not available in the original game; Master Quest and Boss Challenge.

Master Quest mode will see some surprising changes to the game. Puzzles will have to be thought about and solved in new ways from the main Story mode, whilst items and enemies will be found in different locations. The land of Hyrule has also been reversed as locations are mirrored - so what would ordinarily have been on the right now appears on the left and vice versa. Enemies will also prove more difficult to beat, and as such the greater complexity involved in this new Master Quest will test the gameplay abilities of even the most seasoned fans and prove a new experience for all.

The new Boss Challenge mode acts as an extra treat for those players who reach a certain point within the game. It will provide players with the opportunity to face any of the previous Bosses they have defeated once again, or, the option to face and confront them one-by-one, all in a continuous battle.

The game’s graphical re-working coupled with the three-dimensional depth provided by your Nintendo 3DS breathes new life into this timeless classic. Whether you're a first-time player or a regular visitor to Hyrule, the engaging, immersive gameplay features of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D offers a magical new adventure for all.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D launches across Europe, exclusively for Nintendo 3DS, on 17th June, 2011.

Gut-thulhu

The stars are right
And big and bright...
Deep in the heart of Darkness!

Hey saddle pals, the stars are indeed right for yer pals at Hawgleg Publishing to announce their next great project, a fusion of Wild West mayhem and the hottest new trend in fashion and pseudo-goth lifestyles: Steampunk. Throw in a healthy batch of the Elder Gods and you've got the next great wave in Weird West gaming: Gut-thulhu!
That's right, trail buddies, Hawgleg's Three M's (Murphy, Mitchell and Mauer) have gone and nabbed the license to H.P. Lovecraft's greatest creation, none other than the Cthulhu Mythos itself!
"Normally, I'd say that words cannot describe my excitement," said Gutshot co-creator Mike Mitchell. "But this time, there are precisely the right words to describe it: 'Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl Gutshot fhtagn,' or 'In his house at R'lyeh, dead Cthulhu waits dreaming of Gutshot!'"
Although other games have touched on the mash-up of Cthulhu and Westerns, Gut-thulhu will be the first game to focus on it exclusively.
"I am confident that we will take matters in hand and beat off the competition," Mitchell said with a grin.
Murphy quickly agreed, adding that Hawgleg brings an impressive package to the table.
"They say that the best writing is based on what you know," said game co-creator Mike Murphy. "If that's true, then this game should knock your cowboy boots off! Mitchell can trace his roots in the Southwest back to the 1790s, and I have a deep, personal, (and occasionally disturbing) history of associating with Goth Chicks."
And, of course, Paul "Mad Dog" Mauer has a long history of cleaning up the messes left by the Two Mikes.

The Road to R'lyeh

Gut-thulhu was the fruit born from this year's annual Spring Fling trip, wherein our intrepid travelers traverse the globe trying to blow off steam while searching for the next big thing. Since Asia and the Mideast are unsafe, and the trio is still banned from entering Bongolesia, the three decided to spend their money at home this year, in Sin City itself… Las Vegas!
"Visiting Las Vegas was like a homecoming for us," Mitchell explained as he sipped a bottle of German Optimator Spaten beer. "Murphy was living in Vegas back in 2000 when we had our first meeting about Gutshot, and decided to embark on developing this game for publication. It's been a long, weird journey, but it's definitely borne fruit."
Murphy, who moved away years ago (after a horde of bitter feminists stormed the Gold Nugget theater and forced the closing of his infamous one-man show, Women and Cats, Why Men Hate Both), decided that enough time had passed and that it was probably safe for "Mr. Bastard" (his stage name) to return to The Strip.
"Plus, the statute of limitations had run out," Murphy added, sipping Bushmill's from his crystal shot glass.
Paul, of course, came along to hold the bail money. He was sipping Starbuck's Iced Vente Chai with one-and-a-half pumps of mocha.
Needless to say, two of the trio were pretty inebriated… er, "happy" when they stepped out of the chartered party plane into the dry night air of the Las Vegas airport. Above them, a million stars seemed to twinkle in the darkness.
"Something about those stars just looks right," Murphy said looking up to the heavens. Little did he know that truer words had never before passed his lips.
"We hopped a cap and asked the Middle Eastern driver to take us to the Rio," Mitchell said.
"No, it was a Pilipino and we asked him to take us to the Hilton," Murphy corrected.
"No, I'm pretty sure he was Middle Eastern, probably from Jordan."
"I beg to differ. He was definitely from the Philippines. And it was the Hilton."
"Well, he could have been from Israel, but I'm sure it was the Rio."
"No, it was almost certainly the Philippines. Or maybe Hawaiian? But it was definitely the Hilton. I remember because we had talked about going to the Star Trek Experience, which is at the Hilton."
"I thought the Star Trek Experience closed years ago," Mitchell pondered. "And I'm sure the driver wasn't an islander; he was of the desert."
"No. I mean, it's possible that he was from Sri Lanka. He reminds me of that massage therapist we met on our last trip to Asia, and he was from Sri Lanka."
"No. Absolutely not, you're thinking of the Taiwanese massage therapist, and we met him at the mall the last time you were in Houston."
"So who am I thinking of?" Murphy asked.
"I have no idea."
"And are you sure the Star Trek Experience has closed?"
While both the Mikes pulled out their smart phones to look up that bit of info (it closed on September 1, 2008), Paul took a long sip of his Starbucks and muttered, "The driver was a blonde woman and we were going to the Riviera… that's when we found the book."

Oh, that Mad Arab…

"We found a copy of the Necronomicon in the backset of a cab," Murphy said with about as much inflection as if he'd found a suitcase containing a leather nun's habit.
By this point, the Mikes were pretty "relaxed," and so was their judgement.
"We decided to use the book to summon Cthulhu," Mitchell said with about as much inflection as if he were used to wearing a leather nun's habit (he is). "We decided to pull over at the nearest 7-Eleven convenience store and see if we could wrangle up the candles, salt, and other items we'd need for the ritual. But, this being Las Vegas, we couldn't find a virgin anywhere."
"Darn it, why does it always call for a virgin sacrifice?" Murphy bemoaned into his bourbon.
Then Paul suggested using a squirrel…
"For the life of me, I cannot say why that made sense at the time, but it did. I bought a bag of nuts and lured it from a tree and, drawing the yellow sign in white salt, we performed the ritual in the alley behind the convenience store," Murphy said.
Alas, the ritual worked… sort of. The bumbling mystics summoned Squirrel-thulhu by mistake. He was angry at being disturbed, but it turns out a Squirrel Cthulhu only has ten hit points, so when it made a dive for Mitchell's nuts, Murphy grabbed it by his bushy tail (a move he's quite adept at) and slammed him against the side of the 7-Eleven. Then "Mad Dog" Mauer proving his namesake once again, executed a flawless 'Capt. Kirk flying side kick' and bashed in its little, fuzzy, tentacled head.
The trio then broke into a heated discussion on whether or not we should cook up the carcass, but couldn't settle on whether to use Murphy's Famous Squirrel Stew recipe (handed down from his great grandpappy, Jumpin' Jeremiah Murphy), or the recipe for Granny Mauer's Calamari-Mania. In a rare case of lucidity, Mitchell suggested that, just perhaps, it might not be wise to dine on the flesh of an Elder God… even if he was just a tentacled squirrel.
Leaving the flesh to rot, they returned to the cab and headed off to the casino.

Finally at the casino convention center…

Arriving at the casino convention center, the boys received quite a shock. Unbeknownst to them, the Riviera was hosting the 27th Annual Lovecraftian Leather Fetish & Furry Goth Chick Convention.
"By the yellow sign," Murphy muttered. "Not these people… again!"
Entering the casino, the three were quickly surrounded by a throng of Goth chicks. Once again, Murphy's reputation had preceded him. The thin-eyebrowed, heavily mascaraed gaggle of Goths were out for his blood (for crimes both real and imagined), but thankfully, security shooed them away, leaving the boys face to face with Lucinda Lovecraft, great-grandniece of H.P. Lovecraft himself, and daughter of Algernon Lovecraft, the convention organizer.
"I know famous game designers when I see them," she said. "You have a Regal Bearing that is unmistakable, even in these tawdry surroundings. Please, I beseech thee, can you provide us a service that we are in desperate need of. In other words, you have what I want… nay, what I need."
Three smiles quickly faded as she explained that Charlie Sheen had been kicked out of the hotel and she was in desperate need for three "sturdy geeks… er, men, that is," to judge the Miss Cephalopod 2011 contest.
"To cut a long story short, we judged the contest and no one was more surprised than us to find out that, after the crown had been awarded and the tentacles had been removed, the winner was none other than Lucinda Lovecraft herself!" Mitchell exclaimed.
"She had won for "performing duties far beyond those of the average cephalopod," Murphy added. And that, he said, led to the meeting that would change their lives.

Meeting Big Daddy Lovecraft

Mitchell and Murphy were quickly spirited away into the inner sanctum of Big Daddy Lovecraft himself. Paul, meanwhile, waited for them in the casino, gambling away the bail money in a high-stakes game of Texas Hold-Hold'em.
"Lovecraft was certainly true to his name," Mitchell said. "He loved his craft… and was quite skilled at it, too."
"His staff was quite impressive," Murphy added.
"I don't want anyone to think we're just giving his staff lip service, but it was definitely impressive… especially when we took it in hand to come together on the finer details of our merger."
"Merger might not be the right word," Murphy corrected, "It's more of a licensing agreement for Hawgleg Publishing to use the Cthulhu Mythos in its publications… specifically a Wild West/Steampunk/Horror fusion that serve as the basis for an upcoming line of rules, miniatures, and related products."
Hawgleg Publishing practically bent over backwards to accept what Lovecraft had to offer.
"The man knows how to drive home a hard bargain," Murhpy said. "There's no doubt about that. But, when it call came out in the end, it was definitely worth it."
The central product will, of course, be the Gut-thulhu rulebook, which was released earlier this year in Las Vegas at the 27th Annual Lovecraftian Leather Fetish & Furry Goth Chick Convention.
