Event - Trolls et Légendes 2023

This is a placeholder for the Trolls et Légendes report.. the biggest & brightest fantasy-larp event in Belgium since 2005.
Out of habit I wanted to say "something to look forward to every 2 years", but at the request of the fans it is now an annual fantasy fair.

Sometimes it's all in the details

Let us put the grievances up front:
▼ Never ever was it so crowded on a Sunday.The entire reason for going on Sundays was to have a bit of breathing space and room to take a picture. Well.. not in 2023.. which can only be good for the event itself.
▼ My stubborness is legendary.. hence at certain events I want my galette (= buckweat pancake).. but almost an hour standing in line was also legendary. Luckily during fantasy fairs you can step out of the line to take a picture and step right back in. Thank you for being nice beings.
▼ The entire gang got drunk and I was BOB (= designated driver) I wasn't made to be sober  T-T
▼ The dealers, artists & writers.. because it was impossible to leave the event without buying something. Okay..well actually this means the dealers, artists & books were of a very good quality.. still.. you managed to make me go over budget.. again 😳
▼ This year I missed the opportunity to test some games. Next year I'll drag the gang to a table and force them to play! However, they feared the language barrier. Very understandably so let's try to find a way to make the boardgames, RPG's & wargames on site more open to non-French speakers. I would love to RPG with them.
▼ In the beginning, glass vials that are part of a costume & metal swords were still allowed. Now no event seems to accept those any longer. Very sad, but times have changed.
▼ Seeing the rise in prices of all things LARP, I was hoping to find a corner with bargain deals.. I must have overlooked it.
▼ Placeholder for when I think of more grievances.. I will because I'm mean and I think deeply for long seconds about what might be improved.

One smile suffizes to still the beast

Now the positive:
▲ The weather. Sometimes you have to be thankful for the small things like Sunday having the best weather of the week.
▲ The mead / hydromiel & pancakes. No comment.
▲ The music. And yes, some concerts & performances are completely free. Make sure to check them out. The mixed media happening of Celtic music & live graffiti on the same stage was an original addition.
▲ The creatures roaming the grounds. Dazzling, surprising or horrendous.. they all looked great & were 1000% better humans than the average Joe sitting behind their QAnon message boards.
▲ The quality of the dealers, craftspeople, artists, .. so much more variation than on FACTS for example. Much more dangerous for the wallet.
▲ Such a great place to have a drink and even one to many.. you might even see a pink elephant
▲ A great mix of ages and it's good to see (grand)parents and the kids enjoy their hobby together.
▲ Visiting actors, writers & comic book artists (eventhough I completely forgot to look for Esmeralda Hermans and her fantasy comic.. next time, for sure!)
▲ Extra toilets outside. Damn right!
▲ Axe-throwing .. 'nuff said.
▲ Big thumbs up for security & crew. They were absolutely helpful.

Event - Les fêtes médiévales de Binche (2024)

Let's be really quick and dirty about this event: ▼ There was was an ice-cold wind, but most of the day it was dry, △ Each time the sun showed itself it was wonderful and we all smiled, △ Got a superb medieval cape that really helped against the wind, △ Great food ( including pancakes! ) and too much mead to taste, △ Überfriendly people ( visitors, reenactors, larpers & vendors.. sorry, I didn't run into anyone of the organisation, n or crew ) △ Excellent location: high upon the ramparts of the old city, △ Parked by accident right behind the corner of the event, △ Free parking, free toilets, and a fountain that will be useful during a future hot edition , △ Music by Skayrish , cannon fire, birds of prey, throwing things ( a bad combination with mead ),.. △ A fun afternoon eventhough it was tiny. . .   Let's provide you a few links: ▷ All photos can always be found on/downloaded from my Flickr and here ! ▷ A " How to download stills from Flickr &

Collab - Verbeke Foundation cosplay day 2024

A few weeks ahead of the first cosplay shoot day of 2024 in the Verbeke Foundation I had wisely estimated that I would run into & make pictures of 10% of all cosplayers. That was a gross misestimation.. I think it's closer to 5%. Every edition organizer Geert seems to double the number of participants. I still don't know how he manages, but kudos for gathering somewhere around 240 participants. Event - Elftopia 2021

The 1st costume event in.. nearly 2 years? You can't believe the ecstasy of opening those tickets in the mail, getting that CovidSafePass in time and hearing that it would not get cancelled as feared ( unlike Castlefest ). Preparing the cameras. Getting ideas for shots. Actually smiling. Thank you Elftopia . However there was a little hick-up. I could blame it on traffic jams making us arrive extremely late.. but it wasn't that. It was exactly as feared and predicted in this post : I didn't dare to make photos. Have I gotten scared of walking up to people for a picture? Have I lost so much self-confidence? Did I stop trusting my technical instincts? Did I start doubting my gear? Haven't I talked to live strangers for that long? Is this what people call a panic attack or anxiety? I guess a bit of all of those. Meade helped a bit. Spending some time on the event finally got me clicking again.. but by that time the fair was closing its gates. So I returned home with on

Event - Internationale carnavalsstoet Hasselt

Yes, I know: I had promised to cover only one carnaval's parade per year. But I have a great excuse: a brandnew camera fell into my lap to experiment with and I needed an event for testing. So no, it was neither the free booze, nor the happy people, nor the smoutebollen that lured me to Hasselt.. those are simply perks of working . Just to be clear: that Sony A9III is a magnificent camera with crazy specs. I will probably consider buying the 2nd or 3rd generation of its Global Shutter sensor technology, but for now it's great but not needed for what I shoot. Sports and wildlife shooters are the intended targets and they'll enjoy it greatly.  Hasselt carnaval has a very enjoyable parade wth several international participants & loads of confetti. The 2024 parcours had some very long, straight streets.. perfect to test a huge 300mm f2.8-lens. Thes most excillerating was however something tiny & strictly personal: I really felt good that day and jumped right

Body-Art Festival

In een klein dorpje nabij Mechelen verzamelen zich sinds 2000 ieder jaar opnieuw een keur aan bodypaint- en make-upartiesten voor de laatste grote Europese wedstrijd van het jaar: de felbegeerde Body Artist Award. Op 12 november kan het publiek deze levende kunstwerken bewonderen tijdens het ganse scheppingsproces, zichzelf laten grimeren, deelnemen aan workshops en de mooiste bodypaints vastleggen op de gevoelige plaat. Eigenlijk zijn er zo 4 titels om te verdelen: één voor de mooiste airbrush, één voor het beste spons & penseelwerk, één in de categorie special effects en een laatste voor de mooiste festivalfoto. In elke discipline mogen amateurs, studenten en (semi) pro's zich met elkaar meten. Wees er dus tijdig bij, alvorens deze creaties voor altijd verdwijnen onder een warme douche.
