De NASA heeft het prijskaartje voor zijn overblijvende shuttles laten zakken, zo heeft het Amerikaanse ruimtevaartbureau zelf meegedeeld. In principe neemt de NASA eind dit jaar de Discovery, Atlantis en Endeavour uit de vaart. Dit was beslist als nawee van het dodelijke ongeluk met het ruimteveer Columbia op 1 februari 2003. Terwijl nog aan een nieuw lanceersysteem werd en wordt gewerkt, besliste de NASA in december 2008 de drie resterende ruimtetuigen te verkopen aan musea of andere educatieve instellingen. Zo gaat de Discovery naar het Smithsonian Lucht- en Ruimtevaartmuseum in Washington. De andere twee staan nog in de etalage. Aanvankelijk vroeg de NASA 42 miljoen dollar om de ruimtependels aan de geïnteresseerden te bezorgen. Nu is die prijs naar 28 miljoen dollar omlaag geschroefd.
