Event - Verbeke Foundation Cosplay Day

Allow me to sum up the ingredients that made several outdoors costume events very enjoyable: No rain + casual strolls through a gorgeous location + drinks with nice people + casually making a photo of a splendid or funny or catchy constume + food + musical (re)discoveries + some more wine or mead

The cosplay day at one of the strangest (yet fascinating) musea in Belgium had most of those ingredients in its recipe. So thank you Geert for putting this together.

Actually more remarks for myself:
▶ Making a discovery tour of the grounds, finding great spots and then noticing everybody is staying in/near the greenhouse is silly.. but damn there are some great installations in the park.
▶ Being actively absent from social media + being to introvert/asocial and to busy to chat & actively communicate has consequenses on days like these,
▶ Feeling the dire need to eat and the desire to have a wine often comes at the same time as superb costumes pass by and is painfully bad timing.. Multitasking issues? Wine + taking a photo = no probs, Food + taking a photo = growl.. I'm eating!
▶ There was this hour (or 2?) when I felt I had shot so few of the present cosplayers that I stopped looking for my kind of pictures. Suddenly I just wanted to shoot more & faster, in stead of looking for an inspiring spot, some interesting foreground and a strong pose.. Then I had a wine, relaxed again and got creative once more.

In between processing these images I'll edit my new Sony tech video for Youtube, direct the filming of a training video, film a videoclip and host 2 photowalks in the zoo of Antwerpen.. by that time it should be sunday again. And to imagine it will only get busier in the April till July period. When am I going to find time to make some shortfilms???

Collab - Verbeke Foundation cosplay day 2024

A few weeks ahead of the first cosplay shoot day of 2024 in the Verbeke Foundation I had wisely estimated that I would run into & make pictures of 10% of all cosplayers. That was a gross misestimation.. I think it's closer to 5%. Every edition organizer Geert seems to double the number of participants. I still don't know how he manages, but kudos for gathering somewhere around 240 participants. Event - Elftopia 2021

The 1st costume event in.. nearly 2 years? You can't believe the ecstasy of opening those tickets in the mail, getting that CovidSafePass in time and hearing that it would not get cancelled as feared ( unlike Castlefest ). Preparing the cameras. Getting ideas for shots. Actually smiling. Thank you Elftopia . However there was a little hick-up. I could blame it on traffic jams making us arrive extremely late.. but it wasn't that. It was exactly as feared and predicted in this post : I didn't dare to make photos. Have I gotten scared of walking up to people for a picture? Have I lost so much self-confidence? Did I stop trusting my technical instincts? Did I start doubting my gear? Haven't I talked to live strangers for that long? Is this what people call a panic attack or anxiety? I guess a bit of all of those. Meade helped a bit. Japan, het is een wereld die we als Westerlingen nooit zullen vatten. We lezen massaal de manga’s en de hentai. We kijken naar de anime. We worden overweldigd door de films die zich wentelen in extreem geweld, ongrijpbare horror en magistrale, epische schoonheid. Takashi Miike, Hideo Nakata en Akira Kurosawa. Het is een wereld waarvan we enkel het oppervlak kunnen aanraken, het onderhuidse heeft echter iets onbevattelijks voor ons Westerlingen. Ook de erotiek in het land van de rijzende zon is op gans andere zeden gebaseerd. Van waar komt die fixatie van Japanners op SM-toestanden met meisjes in schooluniformen? Wat betekenen die grote reeënogen en eindeloze benen die wij zo vereenzelvigen met de mangacultuur? Hoe komt het dat hun fantasieën ook bij ons langzaam ingeburgerd geraken? Dat zelfs de woordenschat in dit verband soms wordt overgenomen. Wat is de erotico-myhologische basis van verhalen zoals Sailor Moon? Event - Internationale carnavalsstoet Hasselt

Yes, I know: I had promised to cover only one carnaval's parade per year. But I have a great excuse: a brandnew camera fell into my lap to experiment with and I needed an event for testing. So no, it was neither the free booze, nor the happy people, nor the smoutebollen that lured me to Hasselt.. those are simply perks of working . Just to be clear: that Sony A9III is a magnificent camera with crazy specs. I will probably consider buying the 2nd or 3rd generation of its Global Shutter sensor technology, but for now it's great but not needed for what I shoot. Sports and wildlife shooters are the intended targets and they'll enjoy it greatly.  Hasselt carnaval has a very enjoyable parade wth several international participants & loads of confetti. The 2024 parcours had some very long, straight streets.. perfect to test a huge 300mm f2.8-lens. Thes most excillerating was however something tiny & strictly personal: I really felt good that day and jumped right

Body-Art Festival

In een klein dorpje nabij Mechelen verzamelen zich sinds 2000 ieder jaar opnieuw een keur aan bodypaint- en make-upartiesten voor de laatste grote Europese wedstrijd van het jaar: de felbegeerde Body Artist Award. Op 12 november kan het publiek deze levende kunstwerken bewonderen tijdens het ganse scheppingsproces, zichzelf laten grimeren, deelnemen aan workshops en de mooiste bodypaints vastleggen op de gevoelige plaat. Eigenlijk zijn er zo 4 titels om te verdelen: één voor de mooiste airbrush, één voor het beste spons & penseelwerk, één in de categorie special effects en een laatste voor de mooiste festivalfoto. In elke discipline mogen amateurs, studenten en (semi) pro's zich met elkaar meten. Wees er dus tijdig bij, alvorens deze creaties voor altijd verdwijnen onder een warme douche. The life & death of costumes

Veel mensen lijden een grijs bestaan. Ze zijn kleurloos, onopvallend en komen nooit dichter bij het beleven van hun fantasie dan onderuitgezakt met een zak chips naar Temptation Island staren. Er bestaan echter ook groepen mensen die proberen te ontsnappen aan die alledaagse grijsheid van het bestaan en die de kleuren, actie en Schwung van het fantasiebestaan proberen te integreren in de " echte " wereld. Dit zijn de mensen die je soms in kostuums kan zien rondlopen tijdens reënactment, larp en cosplay. Het begint meer en meer een trend te worden, ook in ons eigen Belgenland. Aztek-TV zal in de volgende maanden dan ook verschillende reportages wijden aan deze buitenbeentjes. Maar laat ons eerst enkele definities voorstellen die een onderscheid maken tussen de essentie van larp, cosplay en reënactment:    Larp: De nadruk ligt op het consequent invullen van een rol.
